ICARUS CrossFit is a 280 sq/m Health and Fitness Coaching facility located in the Jinqiao Pudong District of Shanghai China.
We offer small group classes (10 or less) and individual coaching across a variety of Health and Fitness programs utilizing the CrossFit methodology as our foundation. Each class is run by one or more of our certified trainers.
What we offer
At ICARUS CrossFit you will not find rows of stationary bikes and weight machines. Instead you will find pull-up bars, kettlebells, barbells and wide open space for squatting, running, jumping, climbing, lifting and throwing – moving your body the way it is meant to be moved. It means that all your workouts will be comprised of exercises that mimic movements performed in day-to-day life or sport. We focus on improving functional movements that are necessary and common in your daily activities.
It also means that you will never get bored. With our constantly varied programming you will rarely do the same workout twice in any given year. You will never have to program your own workouts or spend hours in the gym. Instead, each day a workout will be provided for you that is scalable to suit your fitness level. And because all of our workouts are less than 60 minutes they can fit into even the busiest schedules.
Our fitness programming aims to improve your capacity in ten recognized fitness domains cardio-respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. The result is comprehensive physical fitness and restored vitality.

So what does ICARUS mean?
In Greek mythology, Icarus (IK-uh-rus) was the son of the master craftsman Daedalus. Icarus and his father attempted to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax. Icarus’s father warned him first of complacency (satisfied with how things are and not wanting to change them) and then of hubris (excessive pride, self-confidence or egotism), asking that he fly neither too low nor too high, because the sea’s dampness would clog or the sun’s heat would melt his wings. Icarus felt he knew better and ignored his father’s instructions and flew too close to the sun. The wax on his wings melted and Icarus plummeted into the sea where he drowned. This is a tragic story of failed personal over-ambition.
A lot of similarities exist between Icarus and people of today when it comes to becoming or staying physically and mentally fit.
- How often do people set a goal of losing weight, getting in shape or starting a fitness program but do not deliver on their ambitious goals?
- How many people are complacent, either by not being physically active or being physically active but falling into a “regular routine” that does not produce results?
- How many people have too much pride or ego, and don’t want to ask for coaching and feedback or think that their training programs are better than anyone else’s?
At ICARUS CrossFit everyone has to check their ego at the door because you will be challenged, inspired and possibly humbled by our Fitness Programs. Our Coaching staff will work with you to develop specific goals and ensure we are with you every step of the way so that you achieve these goals. Our programs and coaching methodology are designed to eliminate complacency and generate results. Like Icarus, we will provide you with the tools and motivation to help you soar to the edge of your limits and make you feel “the burn”, but we will also make sure that we bring you safely back to the ground so that you live to fly another day. It is “the burn” that will make you stronger.
